A calm bedroom is not about buying more things. It is about fewer things competing for your attention. The room should give your eyes somewhere to rest. Here are the changes that make the biggest difference, in order.

Five changes, in order of impact

  1. Clear the surfaces. Nightstands and dressers collect the most visual noise. Keep two or three objects per surface. A lamp, a book, one thing you like.

  2. Fix the light. Overhead light is harsh at night. Use lamps with warm bulbs, around 2700K. Put them on dimmers if you can.

  3. Narrow the color palette. Pick two or three colors and repeat them. Soft neutrals, muted blues, sage, and warm whites all work. Strong contrast keeps the eye moving.

  4. Add soft texture. Linen bedding, a wool throw, a rug underfoot. Texture adds warmth without adding clutter.

  5. Hang one piece of art that slows you down. The wall over the bed is usually the largest open surface in the room. What goes there sets the mood more than anything else.

Choosing calming art

Calming art has a few things in common.

  • Open space. Sky, water, fog, horizon. Empty areas give the eye a place to rest.

  • Soft light. Sunrise, sunset, and overcast light feel quieter than harsh midday sun.

  • A limited palette. Two or three related colors, not a full rainbow.

  • One subject. Busy scenes with lots of detail keep the brain working.

What to avoid over a bed: high contrast, crowded compositions, and anything that makes you want to study it. Save those for a living room or hallway, where you want people to stop and look.

Size matters here too. Over a queen bed, aim for art 40 to 45 inches wide.

Prints from my Calming collection

These three are the ones I would hang over a bed. Each one has open space and a single subject, and none of them asks you to study it.
